OLD MEETS NEW: HISTORIC RENOVATION AND EXPANSION FOR THIS CAMBRIDGE NON-PROFIT

At 113 Brattle Street, Lincoln Institute of Land Policy has one of the most historic addresses in Cambridge, which required careful planning and construction when rehabilitating the original structure and making room for an expansion in the back of the building.

Built in the 1850s, our team was tasked with completing a gut demolition of what was a historic home. Considering this was to be used for office, education and training purposes, the challenge was to convert this into a modern space for both employees and visitors, all while keeping the historic integrity of the building. To do this successfully the project team worked closely with the Cambridge Historical Commission to carefully adhere to guidelines.

The overall 20,000 SF project consisted of all new mechanical systems and elevator modernization. The new addition includes offices, conference spaces and a large classroom. Original millwork trim and wainscoting in the house portion were restored to keep the historic charm. Similarly, all of the original windows were removed and restored off-site before re-installation.

On the exterior, a new cedar shake roof and copper gutters were replaced. New shingles were installed on the second level and the siding was repaired, replaced and repainted. A new permeable paver driveway and landscaping complete the overall presentation of the building.
