In a goal-oriented environment like Timberline, where every day brings new challenges and deadlines, the value of quality sleep can fall down our list of priorities. However, we recognize the considerable impact proper rest has on our well-being. Last week, with our employee health partner O2X Human Performance, we hosted an interactive presentation to emphasize the importance of sleep.
Dr. Laurie Craigen returned to our Canton Office to speak about the pivotal role that sleep plays in our daily lives. Throughout the presentation, we explored the science of sleep and its impact on our health, stress and performance. We also learned practical strategies to improve sleep through 1% changes to our habits, mindset and environment.
Our team talked about sleep as a cornerstone for optimal performance; not just a period of rest. Dr. Craigen shared three reasons why we need to prioritize sleep:
- Improved Performance: The link between sleep and performance cannot be overstated. Getting the right amount of quality sleep directly impacts cognitive abilities, reaction times, decision-making and productivity in the workplace.
- Health Impacts: Lack of sleep doesn’t just lead to grogginess; it affects our physical and mental health. Sleep deprivation can cause a multitude of issues, spanning from a compromised immune system to an increased likelihood of experiencing mental health difficulties such as stress and anxiety.
- Better Overall Well-Being: With hectic schedules and urgent deadlines, safeguarding our sleep should be a priority. We can boost our overall well-being by consciously making small yet impactful 1% changes, like developing the right mindset, improving our environment, and establishing healthy sleep habits.
The presentation dove into the reasons we don’t get enough sleep, pointing out factors contributing to the widespread issue. It covered how different parts of our daily lives impact our sleep patterns, from the disruptive impact of blue light and screens to the connection between lifestyle choices like diet, physical activity and stress management.
Finding distractions that disrupt our rest, adjusting our environment or adopting relaxing routines before bed can significantly benefit our health and performance. Making small changes, even just a 1% improvement, is vital in maximizing the benefits of
our sleep. Utilizing breathing exercises, promoting daytime relaxation, limiting caffeine intake and minimizing long naps are all useful ways to develop better habits.
With these useful tips and tools, we can take one step toward achieving effective and impactful sleep habits. It’s clear that our commitment to better rest isn’t just a one-time effort; it’s an ongoing journey of improvement. By embracing the concept of becoming 1% better in our habits, we pave the way for better performance, improved health and a happier, more balanced life.
