Repositioning of nursing home into emergency housing solution

FamilyAid, a leading non-profit dedicated to addressing family homelessness in Greater Boston, entrusted Timberline with the 30,000 SF transformation of a former nursing home into its second Family Navigation Center—the largest of its kind. The new Newton facility serves as a resource hub, providing educational spaces, access to essential services, and temporary housing to support families on their path to stable, permanent housing.

The repositioned facility features 42 temporary housing units with group and individual educational areas, enabling parents and children to engage in programs that build life skills. Our team built out a fully equipped kitchen and dining areas to provide space for nutrition programs and meal preparation. We also built a new outdoor playground that supports children’s physical and social development, offering a safe environment for play.

The renovation included repairs such as window replacements and extensive updates to the former nursing home’s building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems to meet the latest energy code requirements. In addition to the comprehensive renovation, Timberline is currently constructing a pathway ramp to further improve accessibility to the facility.

The new Family Navigation Center marks an important milestone in providing essential support for families facing homelessness in Greater Boston.
