Instrumentation Laboratory
Bedford, MAPHASED RENOVATIONS: R&D, OFFICE, MANUFACTURING FACILITY
Instrumentation Laboratory (IL) manufactures and distributes instruments, related reagents and data management solutions for hospitals around the world, at point-of-care and in the laboratory. When Instrumentation Laboratory was looking to partner with a forward-thinking construction management firm to lead them through phased renovations at their fully-occupied 300,000 SF headquarters in Bedford, they turned to our team for assistance. The goal: update the overall look and feel of the workplace, improve the organization of spaces and upgrade systems to enhance user experience while bringing the facility in line with the organization’s world-leading status in medical device development.
Initial renovations consisted of new offices, conference rooms, customer support areas, electronics labs and equipment testing areas. A new interconnecting stairway provided improved employee circulation throughout the facility.
Substantial improvements to MEP systems were performed in addition to exterior façade upgrades, new landscaping and site work―no easy task considering daily activities at this multi-function, 700-employee facility needed to continue without interruption. Timberline rose to the occasion with a preconstruction, phasing and on-site construction mitigation plan that minimized disruption to operations and employees while delivering on time and budget.
IL Training Center
The most recent phase consisted of the demolition of existing office space and break areas to make room for the new IL Training Center. The scope included all-new office space, conference rooms, training space, as well as a café/break room for employees. The spaces on either side of project were fully occupied and employees needed to cross through the site all day, requiring advanced scheduling and coordination from the Timberline team.
